Why Messi don't shine against Italian teams

The Argentine has broken record after record of late, but he still has a point to prove against clubs from Serie A

Sombre and subdued, Lionel Messi bowed his head and made a bee-line for the tunnel at San Siro having turned in an unusually poor performance. But Barcelona's 2-0 Champions League last-16 first leg defeat to AC Milan did not mark Messi's first failure in Italy, and in fact the Argentine is still to score a goal from normal play against any side from the bel paese.

Barca look to spring a surprise

Barcelona's coaching team may have a trick up their sleeve for Tuesday night's Champions League last-16 clash with AC Milan as they aim to become the first team ever to overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit since the competition's format changed in 1992.

Gerard Pique
With playmaker Xavi Hernandez looking certain to return from his recent hamstring problem, it had looked like the only selection decision for coach Tito Vilanova and assistant Jordi Roura was whether to start Cesc Fabregas or Alexis Sanchez, with Andres Iniesta then playing either on the wing or in midfield.

Why are Nigerian players missing from list of 50 richest players on the planet?

As the world’s biggest and most influential football website Goal.com released its highly anticipated list of the wealthiest footballers alive, many Nigerians were surprised to find that none of their countrymen had made the list. While Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote was listed among the top 50 billionaires in the world by Forbes a few days back, no Nigerian footballers made the list of the elite of their sport after the country recently won the Africa Cup of Nations.

Benitez rubbishes Fergie's tiredness claim

Benitez rubbishes Fergie's tiredness claim

Interim Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez poured scorn on Sir Alex Ferguson's suggestion that Manchester United's tiredness accounted for Chelsea's comeback in their 2-2 FA Cup quarter-final draw at Old Trafford.
Rafa Benitez, John Obi Mikel and Eden hazard

The Premier League leaders were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney, but Benitez's side came back to earn a replay as substitute Eden Hazard and Ramires scored.
Ferguson, who downplayed the impact of Benitez's substitutions, felt his side were exhausted after their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday.
But his Stamford Bridge counterpart pointed out that his side had played in Romania in the Europa League two days after that - and they had finished the stronger at Old Trafford.
